North High School senior Samara Ford has been named a winner in the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program.

The NASP exists specifically to honor academically talented Black Americans, and is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Samara’s award is being underwritten by the NMSC and provides a single payment of $2,000.

More than 160,000 students entered the 2014 NASP by requesting consideration in the competition when they took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as high school juniors. Last fall, approximately 1,600 of the highest scorers were named semifinalists. Some 1,300 students advanced to the finalist level, and 800 were named National Achievement Scholarship winners.
