CHS Student Honored by Intel

Valley Stream Central High School senior Sylvette Diaz has been awarded the 2016 Intel Science Talent Search Research Report Badge. This award is presented to students who present an “exceptionally well-written college-level report covering their own research” in the prestigious competition.

Only a few students out of the thousands in the nation who submit their research to Intel receive this award. Sylvette has spent three years dedicated to her project, “Size at first infection of native palaemonid shrimp (Palemon pugio, Palaemon vulgaris and Palaemon mondusnovus) of the Western Atlantic by trematode parasites.” She compiled research on the native palaemonid shrimp of the Northwestern Atlantic before and after school and spent the past two summers in the field collecting data, which she then analyzed in the lab with her mentor from C.W. Post University.

In addition to her science research involvement, Sylvette is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the subject honor societies at Central. She plans to study biology and zoology in college.
