South High Junior Stacey Charles participated along with nine other students from other Nassau High Schools in the Town of Hempstead’s annual “Students in Government Day” on May 23. Students are nominated by their schools and compete for the activity by writing an essay about issues facing local government. During the day Stacey shadowed the Town’s Director of Public Safety, Thomas D’Maria.  The culminating activity was a mock emergency management frill held in the Town’s command center wherein the Town was in the path of a major impending hurricane.  Stacey acted as the Director of Public Safety and had to make real time decisions regarding public safety concerns while interacting with other Town Departments. Upon her return to South, Stacy was excited about the experience which gave her a first-hand view of the demands on local government officials to protect and serve the community.
