Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School has been recognized with a 2016 Inviting School Award from the International Alliance for Invitational Education (IAIE). Respect, trust, care, optimism and intentionality are qualities that the awards committee and school assessors found consistently among people and practices at Memorial.

Memorial was selected for this honor based on high levels of inviting practices that the school has created, evidenced in the results of a parent and teacher survey, an application and a site visit. Professional development opportunities focusing on the Invitational Education Theory also played a role in this achievement.

The IE Theory examines a school through the 5Ps (people, places, programs, policies and programs) and serves as a guide to promote a positive climate through caring and welcoming schools. The award will be presented at the IAIE World Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, in November.
