District Names Bret Strauss Memorial JHS Principal

With the start of the 2016-17 school year, the district announced the appointment of Bret Strauss as Memorial Junior High School Principal. Mr. Strauss has an extensive history in the district after having served as an assistant principal at Memorial for five years, prior to which he held a number of roles at Central High School since 2002.

Mr. Strauss joined the district as a business teacher at Central and later became head of the career and technical education department and dean of students. He initiated Central’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter, created the Business and Career and Technical Education honor societies, and implemented an agreement between Central and Farmingdale State College to provide college credit for business classes.

In his time at Memorial, Mr. Strauss has worked closely with the MJHS PPS Department, implemented student recognition initiatives, conducted professional development opportunities, organized after-school activities and oversaw various departments, among other duties.

In 2004, he received the New York State Julian A. Milkes Outstanding New Business Educator Award. He has served as an adjunct professor in the Hofstra University Department of Curriculum and Teaching since 2008, in addition to his in-district involvement.

Mr. Strauss holds an Advanced Graduate Certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University, a Master of Science in secondary education with distinction in business education from Hofstra University, and a Bachelor of Science in business administration and marketing from Towson University.

“It continues to be an honor to have the faith and support of the students, staff and administration of the Valley Stream Central High School District,” Mr. Strauss said. “I look forward to our continued work in the education of our students and our growth together.”
