North High School senior Lena Nguyen was named Third Prize winner in the 2016 Celebration of Suburban Diversity High School Essay Contest, presented by Hofstra University’s National Center for Suburban Studies and sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union.

Entrants were asked to develop essays of 500 words or less that identify and analyze issues presently facing the racially, ethnically, religiously or otherwise diverse Long Island suburbs. Lina’s submission focused on her experiences in coming to the United States from Vietnam. She received a $1,000 scholarship as well as an invitation to the Celebration of Suburban Diversity Banquet, held on Nov. 15 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

According to the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra, which is dedicated to funding diversity-related scholarships and research, the banquet brings Long Islanders together and “is dedicated to the idea – and ideal – that we can be stronger for our differences if we come together to appreciate them.”
