Valley Stream Central High School teacher Jack Gorman has received an Outstanding Educator Award from the University of Chicago based upon a nomination from Class of 2016 graduate Edward Chung.

Each year, the University of Chicago invites first-year students to recommend impactful teachers for this distinguished award. Edward, a current freshman, selected Mr. Gorman as a professional who influenced, challenged and helped him along the path toward intellectual growth.

According to the University of Chicago, “we receive letters back from hundreds of students, inspired by teachers who have changed the course of their lives, who taught them to re-imagine texts, to delve deeper into problem solving, and to think beyond the borders of the classroom in pursuit of their own education.”

Mr. Gorman teaches Advanced Placement Government and Politics and United States History. He has been at Central for 17 years, during which he has advised the History Honor Society and coached varsity boys and girls tennis and junior varsity boys basketball. In addition to a congratulatory letter from the University of Chicago, he received a trophy as a token of honor.
