On Jan. 5 and 6, Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School seventh-graders were joined in their science classes by guests from the Center for Science Teaching and Learning. Based in Rockville Centre’s Tanglewood Preserve, the CSTL organization strives to encourage science learning and literacy in both children and adults.

The Memorial students had opportunities to help the science educators perform demonstrations with liquid nitrogen. They tested how cold the nitrogen made a banana and were able to hammer a nail into a piece of wood with the banana. They used their senses of touch, sight and taste to make the connections between this activity and the knowledge they have obtained this year through the curriculum.
