Another Year as County Champs for North’s Track and Field Teams

North High School’s Boys and Girls Winter Track and Field Teams, the Spartans and Lady Spartans, were named Nassau County Champions for the fourth consecutive year. Both teams won the Conference 5 Championships on Jan. 10 at St. Anthony’s High School, and went on to compete in the County B Championships on Feb. 7 at the same location.

Both North High School teams were up against 29 others at the recent event. For both teams, this was their sixth County Champions title in the last seven years. The boys team has a 12-year Conference Championship winning streak that dates back to 2006, while the girls team has taken top honors in its Conference meet for 10 of the last 12 years.

On the boys team, senior Tyler John was named County Champion in the long jump and triple jump and place second in the high jump. He scored 28 points for the Spartans at the County Championships. Nick Cason, also a senior, was County Champion in the one mile run, placed second in the 1,000 meter run and led the 4x800 meter relay to a fourth place finish in the County meet. Junior Brandon James was named All-County in the long jump, for which he placed second, the triple jump, for which he placed third, and led the 4x200 meter relay to a fourth place finish in the County meet. In the 4x400 meter relay event, senior Evan Peters, juniors Shane Johnson and Javier Blythe and sophomore Jacob Schoenfeld combined to win as County Champions.

From the girls team, sophomore Juel Charles was named County Champion in the shot put and weight throw events. She is currently among the top 5 in New York State in shot put. Senior Tyesha Irving was named All-County in the 55m hurdles, for which she placed third, and led the 4x200 meter relay team to a second place finish. Caryn Martin, also a senior, was named All-County in the high jump for her second place win. Senior Miracle Onuoha achieved All-County in the triple jump, for which she placed third, and finished in fifth place in Long Jump. Seniors Tara Canny and Cianna Sarmiento were named All-County for the 1,500 racewalk.

The teams are coached by Tim Boyens (sprints, jumps, hurdles), Alex Cuozzo (throws) and Mike Frazer (distance, pole-vault).
