Memorial Celebrates Heritage Night

Memorial Celebrates Heritage Night

On Thursday, March 9, Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School students celebrated the diverse cultures in their school at the annual Heritage Night. This event highlighted 24 countries through dance, song, poetry, food and informational posters created by students. A number of students represented their own heritages by wearing traditional clothing, and were very proud to share the many wonderful aspects of various cultures with other attendees.

Heritage Night was part of Memorial’s Foreign Language Week, which took place from March 6-10. Over the course of the five days, students learned basic phrases in languages that they are not currently studying, created posters to promote language learning, wrote poems that described their favorite things and developed odes to submit to the Long Island Language Teachers’ annual language contests.

Language is a valuable component of the Valley Stream Central High School District’s educational program, and is emphasized at all four schools. Central, North and South high schools celebrate similar Foreign Language Week events each year.
