On March 17, the Valley Stream Central High School District presented its 60th annual District Music Festival, co-sponsored by the Valley Stream Council of PTAs. This event brought the schools and community together for a celebration of talented students representing all four schools in the district.

The concert featured performances by the District Festival Orchestra lead by North Orchestra Director Ms. Rebecca Hayden, the District Festival Mixed Chorus conducted by Central High School’s Ms. Amy Neuner, and the District Festival Concert Band under Mr. Douglas Coleman, Central’s Band Director. The groups were chosen based on the results of student auditions in January and rehearsed for many hours in the three weeks running up to the concert.

All three ensembles presented an assortment of works from a variety of eras and cultures. The students rose to the challenges in the music performing two concerts on the 17th. The first, in the morning, was in for an audience of students and staff members from the three Valley Stream elementary school districts. The evening concert saw Central High School’s Keller Auditorium was filled to capacity for the official performance and the presentation of scholarships to three graduating seniors from each high school.

Each year, proceeds from the District Music Festival go toward scholarships for graduating seniors who have demonstrated extraordinary musical involvement throughout their school careers. Central High School student Abiezer Regino, North High School student Rose DioLallevi and South High School student Jessica Ma were honored as the 2017 music scholarship recipients.
