Valley Stream North High School’s SADD club set out on a mission to help teens in need this year. After researching various fundraisers and charitable initiatives, the group decided to focus their efforts on supporting the Teens for Jeans project.

Teens for Jeans is a collaboration between dosomething.org and Aeropostale. According to dosomething.org, more than a million young people experience homelessness in the United States every year and a pair of jeans is among the items they most frequently request. The North students recognized that jeans are highly versatile and durable clothing items that many people are able to donate.

Under the direction of advisor Ada Duran, the SADD club organized a gently-used jeans drive at North and at the neighboring Howell Road elementary school. Due to the kindness of staff, parents and students alike, the group was successful in collecting more than 300 pairs of jeans for donation to a local shelter for youth in need.

“The students felt so happy to be able to help people in their age group and were surprised at how many people homeless teens there are out there,” said Ms. Duran. “Some admitted having taken their clothing for granted and not realizing the importance/difference that a single pair of jeans can make.”
