The Valley Stream Central High School District is proud to announce thirteen winners in the Martin J. Kelly Writing Contest of the Irish Cultural Society of Garden City, which drew 610 submissions from 29 schools across Long Island.
Twelve poets from South High School and one from North will each be awarded a $50 prize during a recognition ceremony, which will be held on May 3 at the Garden City Library.

Congratulations to South students Alan Ayala, Wardah Aziz, Yajvin Dabbiru, Richard Gonzalez, Hannah Johnston, Matthew Kim, Erin Laxton, Jillian Ledesma, Paige Manini, David Manikas, Joshua Rajan, and Dahlia Woodly, and North student Gabriella Mondesir. South's English teachers Deirdre Gordon, Stephanie Guzowski and Kerry Butler encouraged all of their students to create original Gaelic Quatrains as per this year's contest, and Gabriella developed her work in Creative Writing class under the guidance of teacher Nicole Ryan.

The contest is modeled after the SAT’s essay component, with an emphasis on a skillful introduction and closing, a wide variety of sentence structure, a formal style and objective tone and a command of the conventions of standard written English.
