Students in the Valley Stream Central High School District’s Cosmetology Program earned several awards at the Long Island Cosmetology Teacher’s Guild competition, held at the Huntington Hilton on May 8. This event was open to all cosmetology students and featured a variety of skills and creative talents.

Contestants entered categories that included Senior Style, Junior Style, Color, Mannequin Style, Junior Fantasy and Senior Fantasy. South High School junior Hailey Anacacy won first place in the Junior Fantasy category with model Natalie Fiore, also a junior from South. South senior Corine Louis placed third in Mannequin Style. Central High School junior Faesja Fisher received a fourth place award in Junior Fantasy for a style she presented on model/Central junior Leidy Blum.

The Valley Stream students prepared for this event under the direction of teacher Barbara Liotti. Cosmetology is a districtwide, two-year program offered to Central, North, and South juniors and seniors. Participants learn professional techniques for manicuring, facials and skin care, haircutting, coloring, styling, chemical relaxing, permanent waving, make-up and more. They work on mannequins as well as classmates, and seniors provide services for the public on designated Salon Days. After 1,000 hours of classroom training, students can sit for the State Board Exam to become New York State Licensed Cosmetologists.
