On Tuesday, May 30th, the Vietnam War Veterans Association’s Education Committee visited Valley Stream Central High School. This is the second year that the veterans have addressed the building’s tenth- and eleventh-grade Social Studies Regents classes. The seven veterans, most of whom are Valley Stream Central High School District alumni, each shared their experiences during the war, at home immediately after the war and over the few decades that followed.

Students were also provided with opportunities to see artifacts from the war, pictures of the veterans during the war and ask many questions. Danielle Cuomo, a Central High School Class of 2013 graduate who just recently graduated from West Point alongside one of the veteran's sons, made a surprise visit.

The students were very interested in the personal stories that were shared about the veterans' time in combat and how they were treated when they returned. According to Paul Grieco, Central Class of 1964 graduate, "speaking with the students and sharing our experiences is the best form of therapy.” Students took time in classes to write thank you notes and share what the experience meant to them. The Social Studies Department looks forward to making this an annual event to honor those who served for our freedom.
