Two Valley Stream Central High School District students have been selected to participate in the New York State School Music Association’s All-State ensembles, and seven were accepted as alternates. All-State performers will take the spotlight at the 2017 NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester in December. All nine musicians have been featured in All-County ensembles in previous years, as well as in the District Music Festival.

Central High School senior Kristen Smith (Soprano I) will participate in the All-State Mixed Chorus, and North High School senior Chloe Cossentino joins the All-State Symphonic Band on Bassoon. Kristen serves as president of Central’s Tri-M Music Honor Society and is involved in the select choir, chorus and musical productions. Chloe is part of North’s band, marching band, jazz band, chorus and Tri-M Music Honor Society, and attends Mannes Prep pre-college music courses in New York City on Saturdays.

Seniors Naima Alakham (Alto II) and Dominique Coppin (Soprano II) from Central were chosen as alternates for Chorus. Both are members of Tri-M and select choir, and Naima is regular in Central’s musicals and a member of the chorus.

Representing North as All-State alternates are violinist and junior Kailyn Fan for Orchestra, seniors Jessica Buontempo and Geralyn Jones (both Soprano II) for Chorus, and junior Amelia Cossentino as a tuba player for the Symphonic Band. Kailyn is involved in North’s orchestra and Breakfast Club ensemble; Jessica is part of the women’s choir, chorus, 7:10 Downbeats a cappella group and Tri-M; Geralyn contributes to Tri-M, chorus and the 7:10 Downbeats; and Amelia is in band, 7:10 Downbeats, chorus and choir. As an attendee at the New York State Summer School for the Arts Orchestra Studies Institute this past summer she was awarded a NYSCAME Scholarship and the Dean Harrington Scholarship.

South High School senior and violinist Nicole Pellman was selected as an alternate for the All-State Symphonic Orchestra. With a goal to study music education, she has performed in Long Island String Festival Association concerts and with the Long Island Youth Orchestra and Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. She joined a MYO group in Spain two years ago, and this past summer, she attended a chamber group at Stony Brook University.
