Central, North and South high schools are each proud to congratulate members of their senior classes for being named National Merit Commended Students. Seven students representing the Valley Stream Central High School District earned this prominent achievement based on their Preliminary SAT results, and are within the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who took the test.  

The district’s 2017 Commended Students are Aianne Urgel from Central, Chole Cossentino and Mohammad Qadri from North, and Joseph Campbell, Nicholas Chen, Adejuwon Fasanya and David Manikas from South. They are all dedicated scholars who have contributed significantly to their schools and classes.

Aianne is involved in National Honor Society at Central, as well as Math, Science and Social Studies Honor Societies. She plays the French horn in the band and contributes to her school’s Class of 2018 organization, YOLO/Students Against Destructive Decisions club and Japanese club. She aspires to pursue studies in computer science in the future.

Chloe is enrolled in seven Advanced Placement courses and participates in North’s National Honor Society, Math/Science Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society, and is vice president of the World Language/LOTE Honor Society. She is captain of the varsity tennis team and is active in fencing as well. Mohammad is also a member of National Honor Society and Math/Science Honor Society. He is a varsity athlete on the basketball and cross-country teams and is taking five AP classes this year.

Adejuwon, David, Joseph and Nicholas are all members of South’s National Honor Society. Joseph additionally serves as treasurer for the Language Honor Society, secretary for the Science Honor Society and is a participant in Math and History Honor Societies, as well as South’s “It’s Academic” quiz bowl club. He takes six AP courses. Nicholas is involved in the Math, History and Language Honor Societies as well as the Culture Society club. He is enrolled in four AP classes this year. Adejuwon participates in Science, Math, History and Language Honor Societies as well as “It’s Academic.” He is also a winter and spring track athlete and takes five AP courses. David is treasurer of both the Science Honor Society and History Honor Society. He is also a member of the Math, History and Language Honor Societies, Class Council and “It’s Academic.” In addition, he takes six AP classes this year and is a basketball and track athlete.

The Commended Student distinction is presented through the National Merit Scholarship Program, an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Recipients of this title receive letters that indicate outstanding academic promise.
