Valley Stream South High School eighth-grader Keren Dial was named a winner in the Shanti Fund’s 2018 Peace Poster Contest. She will be awarded $701 and her artwork will appear in the organization’s upcoming calendar.

Keren entered the competition last school year as a seventh-grader. She created the original draft of her winning design in 2015 and enhanced it to further express the theme of peace. She submitted her piece with the encouragement of teacher Roseann Valletti.

“All living things on Earth deserve peace,” Keren said when describing the significance of her work. The illustration, which was created with markers, was also selected as the cover for volume five of South’s “Trials of Society” literary art magazine.

Shanti Fund is a charitable organization known for its bridge-building activities between mainstream and newly arrived professional immigrants, as well as educational initiatives and charitable work. Since 2001 focus of the Volunteers has been to inculcate the value systems of world peace leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa and others to our youth on Long Island. The poster contest award recipients will be formally recognized at an upcoming ceremony.
