We are all sadly aware of the tragic event that took place at Marjory Stoneman High School. On behalf of the Board of Education, I want to reassure our school community that the safety of those in our schools is a top priority in Valley Stream.

Our District has initiated many safety related enhancement and improvements over the past several years. Hundreds of interior and exterior cameras are in use throughout our District. Security staff with law enforcement backgrounds patrol the halls of our schools. Our building safety plans are always being reviewed, updated and practiced. We also work in close collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, and follow their recommendations on best practices.

While much has been accomplished we are always looking to make our schools safer places. The Florida tragedy further compels us to look deeper and think harder about how we safeguard our buildings and everyone in them. Let us hope that the rising voices of students, parents and school personnel lead to changes that will further enhance the safety of our schools.

As always, thank you for your continued support,

Dr. Bill Heidenreich
Superintendent of Schools
