At its annual Black History Month Celebration on Feb. 16, students at Valley Stream Central High School honored famous black Americans and their impact to society with presentations in the Library Media Center.

Under the guidance of Lisa DiChiara, library media specialist, students spent weeks researching facts, stories and pictures of historical figures including Charles Mingus, Rosa Parks, Fredrick Douglas, Ben Carson, Madame CJ Walker, Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes.

Among an audience of peers and teachers, students paid tribute to their individual sharing their contributions in art, music, poetry and civil rights as well as how these individuals inspire and influence them.

Senior Elizabeth Olatubosun stood at the podium presenting a biography of bass player Charles Mingus and his work with jazz music.

“I chose to speak about him because as a bassist myself, he’s inspired me to persevere and continue my musical journey.”
