In recent weeks, our district has received a number of non-credible messages threatening harm against our schools. Please be assured that we take every threat seriously. We then work in conjunction with law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation of each situation to gather facts and assess the credibility of the threat. Fortunately, as stated above, recent threats have been found to be non-credible.

Unfortunately, in today’s digital age, rumors circulate throughout the community rapidly. In times of a threat or crisis, information shared on social media in many cases is full of misinformation. Please know that as a district, we work as quickly as we can to gather the facts before we communicate with parents. This, at times, cannot be as quick as the rumor mill spreads on social media. I understand that this can be frustrating; however, while we will work as fast as we can to communicate important information with parents, it cannot come at the expense of providing inaccurate or misleading information.

Over the coming days, principals will be conducting meetings with students at all schools to review the extremely serious repercussions that making a threat against our schools can have. We will also reinforce the importance of reporting anything of concern to a trusted adult. I understand students’ and parents’ anxieties given recent events, and we want to do all we can to assure our community that Valley Stream provides a safe and secure environment for our students.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation.
