Several athletes from the Valley Stream Central High School District achieved impressive results at the winter track state championships, held on March 3 at Ocean Breeze Track and Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island. Six students from South, four from North and two from Central represented the district.

From South, Chibugo Obichere was named state champion in the 55-meter high hurdles for the second consecutive year and placed second in Federation. DeAnna Martin earned All-State honors for the 600-meter, fifth place in NYSPHSAA and sixth place in Federation. They both received All-State honors in the 4x400-meter relay along with Lindsey Smith and Tiara McDougle, who earned fourth-place NYSPHSAA and fifth-place Federation honors, respectively. North High School’s Juel Charles achieved All-State honors and fourth place in NYSPHSAA, and Shane Johnsen earned All-State honors as part of the Section VIII boys distance medley intersectional team, which finished in eighth place.

The district’s track athletes were victorious at the local level as well, during county championships held at St. Anthony’s High School in February. North’s track members and coach Tim Boyens won their fifth consecutive winter county title. Shane took home the first place in the 600-meter and Juel triumphed in shotput, while South’s Ismail Abdullah won the 55-meter hurdles. DeAnna and Chibugo were each awarded two county titles – the 1,000-meter and the 600-meter for DeAnna and the 55-meter and 55-meter hurdles for Chibugo.
