Memorial Junior High School students received valuable lessons in leadership and good character during a visit from the Sweethearts and Heroes team. Motivational speakers Tom Murphy and Rick Yarosh discussed the impact that bullying has on schools, neighborhoods and individuals and emphasized ways to make positive changes.

Sweethearts and Heroes is committed to spreading messages of anti-bullying in order to help victims and also to empower bystanders to make a difference. Murphy and Yarosh stressed that “We all have the potential to be someone’s hero.” Mr. Yarosh, a retired sergeant with the U.S. Army injured in Iraq, also shared his experiences in overcoming adversity and turning a negative situation into a positive one.

Throughout the day, the Memorial students were moved by this event. Several took the opportunity to have lunch with the presenters, during which they learned more about what it takes to be a student leader and why it is important not to be a bystander.
