Valley Stream Central High School senior Adam Birch has earned several achievements based on athletic and academic excellence. The dual-sport athlete, AP student and member of several honor societies has been selected as a News 12 Scholar Athlete and will be featured during this evening’s news segments.

Adam has been a member of the varsity tennis team since eighth grade and the varsity volleyball team since his freshman year. He has achieved All-Conference, All-County and MVP awards for both sports and earned a scholarship from the Nassau County Volleyball Association in recognition of academic excellence. He has also participated on Central’s winter track and cross-country teams.

A team captain for volleyball and tennis, Adam serves as a role model for younger peers as well. He has helped coach girls tennis and boys and girls volleyball at Memorial Junior High School and demonstrates determination on and off the court. During his junior year, upon suffering an injury to his right hand, Adam taught himself to play volleyball as a lefty and had a triumphant season.

Adam’s advice to student athletes is, “Practice with a purpose and make sure you won’t have any regrets.”

“He is positive, dedicated, independent, a leader and gracious,” Central High School’s Athletics Director Joanna Katz wrote in a letter nominating Adam for the News 12 award. “Whatever Adam puts his mind to, he works the very best that he can to get there. He’s the type of athlete who asks questions to better understand the game.”

In addition to his athletic successes, Adam is an outstanding student. He has taken 10 Advanced Placement courses and is a member of the English Honor Society, History Honor Society, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. He has participated in the ASPIRA Club, Culinary Club, PALS Tutoring, SADD, Student Council and YOLO Club, and serves as treasurer for the SCORE Club. Musically talented as well, Adam plays alto and tenor saxophone and has taken the stage in the Community Band and District Music Festival.

Adam and other News 12 Scholar Athletes from across Long Island honored this school year will be recognized during a banquet in June. Tune in to News 12 from 5:50 p.m. tonight, April 11, through tomorrow morning to see Adam in action and hear more about his experiences.
