On April 12, a team of students from Valley Stream Central High School’s Advanced Science Research Program won a $2,000 Grant Prize in the 2018 Northwell Health Spark! Challenge. Congratulations to Melisha Gonseka, Kayla Dhanipersaud, Khadija Zahid, Maheen Babar, Patricia Joseph, Aleena Abraham and Ronie Rocca for this great accomplishment.

The first step of the contest took place in December, when the group observed two surgeries at the Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital. On competition day, held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, students were asked to collaborate with their team to highlight a STEM profession they observed. They created a career advertisement and a two-minute career presentation to showcase the role of a surgeon at the Awards Ceremony, which was attended by 40 other schools and 500 students.

Last year, Central students also received a Grand Prize at this event.
