The Valley Stream Central High School District welcomes Kelly Whitney-Rivera as guidance director. She brings 16 years of experience advising students through grade 12, leading a guidance department, creating programs, and fostering college and career readiness. 

Ms. Whitney-Rivera joins the district from Our World Neighborhood Charter School in Astoria, where she served as a school counselor and department head. She has provided counseling for students; implemented intervention plans; supported families in career, high school and college planning; and worked to ensure smooth transitions across grade levels. Additionally, she introduced a peer mediation program, coordinated schoolwide career fairs and career days, created and administered application workshops for parents and students, and contributed to a departmental focus on anti-bullying and emotional wellness.  

In addition to her guidance responsibilities, Ms. Whitney-Rivera has served as yearbook advisor, coordinated a schoolwide Cabaret Night, implemented an after-school homework help program, developed an Alumni Mentoring Program and implemented an after-school high school preparation program for middle school students. 

Ms. Whitney-Rivera holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University at Albany, SUNY, and master’s degrees from LIU Post and the College of Saint Rose. She is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American School Counselor Association and the New York State School Counselor Association, and has presented at many conferences.
