The Valley Stream Central High School African American Studies class had the privilege of attending the Hofstra Votes signature event on Sept. 20, where they were inspired by keynote speaker Mr.Ta-Nehisi Coates. Mr. Coates is a former correspondent for the The Atlantic and winner of the 2015 National Book Award for his book Between the World and Me. The MacArthur fellow also wrote the latest Black Panther series, released in 2016, and co-wrote spin-offs such as Black Panther: World of Wakanda, Black Panther and the Crew, and Rise of the Black Panther. Mr. Coates is an essential voice for our times and his award-winning writing combines reportage, historical analysis and personal narrative. He was entertaining, thoroughly engaging, inspiring and provided the Central students with his unique perspective on the African American experience in the United States.
