Congratulations to South High School’s Lady Falcons soccer team for bringing home their first-ever New York State Championship title during the weekend of Nov. 10! They triumphed over the No. 8 ranked team in the country, Jamesville-DeWitt High School, by a score of 1-0 in an action-packed overtime game. Kayla Camacho scored the game’s lone goal when she headed in a corner kick by Brianna Pizzaro with 27 seconds left in the first of two ten minute overtime periods. Senior Captain Lindsey Smith, who will be attending West Point next year, was named the New York State Tournament MVP.

The Falcons advanced to the finals by defeating the No. 20 ranked team in the country, Vestal High School, in another overtime thriller. In the semifinal, the Falcons trailed Vestal twice, but tied the score off goals by Brianna Pizzaro and Kayla Camacho to send the game to overtime. Mia Asenjo assisted on both of these goals. Lindsey Smith scored from 30 yards out in the second overtime period and the Falcons defense held on for the victory.

Great job to all the players for demonstrating outstanding team effort!
