Valley Stream North High School’s ninth annual Leadership Academy commenced on Nov. 21, when students in leadership roles gathered and strengthened the skills that are essential in overseeing and working well with others. Various discussions and activities fostered an understanding of qualities that help leaders thrive.

Participants ranged from team captains to officers and chairpersons of clubs and organizations.  As the first of several sessions that will be held throughout the year, this Leadership Academy meeting focused on effective communication. Students split into groups and completed challenges that demonstrated the differences between and power of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Advisors Vanessa Coppeto and Jennifer DiMaio coordinated the training program, senior leaders instructed their younger peers in the activities, and Principal Rachel Green shared opening remarks about the value of positive leadership.

“There will always be challenges and difficulties you’ll face as a leader, but it is how you handle them that make you successful at what you do,” Ms. Green said.
