Valley Stream North High School’s girls and boys varsity winter track and field teams triumphed this season, each winning their respective Conference 5 Team Championships on Jan. 17. This is the girls team’s fourth Conference Team Champion title in a row and 13th earned in the last 15 years. The boys team holds onto its 14-year-long success streak as Conference Team Champion, a title that they have maintained since 2006. 

In a very competitive nine-team track meet, the Lady Spartans were victorious with a score of 149 while South High School was just nine points behind them in second-place. Juel Charles won the Shot Put and 20-pound weight throw events, scoring 20 points for the team. Tori Daniels won the 300 meter dash and Casey Wells earned the Conference Champion title in the Pole Vault event. The relay team of Ariana Paul, Isabellah Paul, Danielle Phillip and Idalis St. Juste won the four by 200 meter team relay. Also earning All-Conference honors are Tobi Adebowale and Joline Viau in the shot put and weight throw events and Jessica Tsu in the high jump. Chichi Onuoha placed fourth in both the 1000 meter run and the 1500 meter run. 

On the boys team, Christian Cicilia won both the 1000 meter run and one mile run. Bernadin Fluerima was named the Conference Champion in the 25-pound weight throw event and placed second in the shot put, while Matthew Foster won the 55 meter hurdles with a new personal best time. Ryan John, the No. 1 freshman in New York State in the triple jump event, scored 28 points for the team by winning the long jump and the triple jump and placing second in the high jump. Jacob Schoenfeld is the Conference Champion in the 300 meter dash and placed third in the 600 meters. Also earning All-Conference honors are Dan Araneo in the pole vault, Mathew Marrone and David Cheque in the two-mile run, Sam Leyendecker in the 25-pound weight throw event and All-County football player and third-place 55 meter dash winner Timothy Hutchinson. The Valley Stream North boys surpassed North Shore High School by 90 points with a final score of 172 points, and will now be vying for their sixth consecutive County Champion title on Feb. 4 and 5.
