Four sophomores in the Authentic Science Research program at Valley Stream North High School were named winners at the Medical Marvels Science Research Competition on March 8, hosted by Northwell Health’s Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Alexandra Wells, Sasha Smalls, Kashmiraa Pandit and Destiny Nieves earned “The Rookie Award” for best research paper by a first-time entrant to the contest.

Under the guidance of teachers Michael Frazer and Kimberly Libertini, the team proposed a program educating high school students of the dangers of vaping by use of a virtual reality system. Besides presenting their research, the students also took part in two workshops presented by Northwell Health, titled “Tobacco in the Media” and “Patient Panel Discussions.”

While at the event, the team had the opportunity to meet 1972 Olympian Shep Messing, who also played professional soccer for the NY Cosmos. Mr. Messing lead a discussion on the dangers of tobacco use.
