During the 2015-2016 school year, an email was sent to the faculty from Ms. Parisi and the Social Studies Department about a fundraiser they organized to raise money for Long Island Honor Flights—a nationwide organization that sends veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials built to honor their service to our country.  Part of the fundraiser was selling fatigue t-shirts.  Unknowingly, a request to purchase two t-shirts (one for math teacher Marianne Barbera and one for her father, Angelo S. Auletta) was going to forever positively impact Mr. Auletta and the Valley Stream North High School Community.

Thanks to Ms. Parisi, the Social Studies Department, the faculty, and the students of Valley Stream North, Mr. Auletta was selected to participate in the Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. in May 2016.  Ms. Barbera was privileged to accompany him on this trip and the experience was so emotionally touching that it became one of the highlights of Mr. Auletta’s life!  For the balance of his life, he spoke proudly about his experience, Honor Flight and our school community.

To thank the Valley Stream North High School Community and to encourage our students to continue to have an interest and involvement in honoring and helping our veterans, the Angelo S. Auletta Scholarship was formed. The Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society raised money for the scholarship by selling “Candy Cane Grams” during the holiday season and apparel to honor veterans. This year, the Angelo S. Auletta Scholarship was given to senior Tracy Colena. Through his work with the Boy Scouts, Tracy has served food and presented American flags to veterans and has volunteered his time with the Sons of the American Legion. Tracy’s work with veterans is influenced by his father, a veteran from the Vietnam War.

The Angelo S. Auletta Scholarship will be awarded annually to a senior who devotes his/ her time working with veterans.
