Valley Stream Central High School’s four College Spanish classes participated in mock college interviews on Oct. 8. Approximately 120 students completed the interviews, which were conducted entirely in Spanish, with a panel of Spanish teachers from Central and Memorial Junior High School.

Students in the College Spanish classes have been learning about college as part of the curriculum. They studied vocabulary related to different majors and career fields, and were required to use all different tenses and subjunctives in the activity. The teachers on the panel represented colleges in Spain and asked the students about themselves and their aspirations.

In addition to strengthening language skills, this assignment was especially significant in helping students prepare for their own college application processes and site interviews. Prior to the interview exercise students completed an email writing task in Spanish. They were also coached on etiquette such as shaking hands, introducing themselves, making eye contact and dressing professionally.
