Welcome
to the 2006-07 School Year
Thomas J. Troisi, Ed.D.
Assistant Superintendent
for Curriculum & Instruction
Dear
Parents, I’d
like to take this opportunity to welcome you
and your children to the 2006-07 school year.
Please be reminded that classes will begin in
each of our four schools on Wednesday, September
6, 2006. As always, the arrival of a new school
year poses challenges to parents, students and
teachers alike. We must continue to partner with
one another, so that together, we can successfully
meet those challenges. Towards that end, I offer
the following advice to parents:
• Please
encourage your children to attend after school
extra help sessions with their teachers
as needed. Starting on Monday, September 25,
all teachers are available to provide students
with extra help on Mondays and Thursdays beginning
at 2:26 p.m.
• Take
time to speak with your children about the
importance of education in their lives.
• Review
their schedules in order to assist them with
time management.
• Establish
a regular time and place for home study that
is free from distracting influences
(i.e., telephones, radio, television, etc.)
• Encourage your child’s participation
in meaningful extracurricular activities and
interscholastic athletics in accordance with
their own academic, health and familial needs.
The “overscheduled child” is a growing
phenomenon in our society today. Speak candidly
with your children about “putting first
things first.”
• Establish
appropriate curfew times for your children.
Please be careful not to confuse
your ability to contact them via cell phone with
an accurate knowledge of where they really are
and what they are really doing, especially in
the late afternoon and evening hours.
• Pay
close attention to signs (i.e., declining academic
performance, behavioral changes,
negative peer group associations, new dress and
possessions, etc.) that could be indicators of
at risk behaviors such as substance abuse, gang
affiliations, theft,etc.
• Please remember that the most accurate
source of information regarding “what’s
really going on at school” comes from school
personnel; teachers, guidance counselors and
school administrators. If you have a question
or have heard a rumor, don’t “play
telephone”. Please contact appropriate
school personnel as needed. We are all here to
assist you with questions or problems.
I wish you and your children a healthy and successful
school year.

CPR fundamentals with basic first aid skills
and a “Food and Nutrition Series” offers
seven sections on basic nutrition for families
with children.
Senior citizen Gold Card holders have the opportunity
to take most courses for the nominal fee of
$10, plus any materials fee. Gold Cards are
available
to those Valley Stream residents 60 years or older who show proof of age and
residency on September 18 – 21 from 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in
the Adult Ed Office, and on September 18 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. in the

and a $20 money order payable to “Nassau BOCES” is due to the instructor
on the first night of class.
The
High School Equivalency Diploma program is for all out-of-school students, 18
to 21 years of age and adults who are seeking an equivalency diploma. Work
is designed to meet the individual
needs of the beginning, intermediate and advanced student in preparing for
all five areas of the GED test. To register as a student under 22 years
of age, you must be a resident, you will
need a letter from your home school, and
you will need to fill out two BOCES forms which
will require a parental signature. The letter
must clearly indicate your date of birth, the
date you left school, and the date of your
graduating class. The classes will be held
