AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM DR. MARC F. BERNSTEIN
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES - MRSA
Below is a letter that is being sent to all parents explaining a series of precautionary measures that our school district has taken as a result of concerns related to Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, or MRSA.
"Dear Parents, Students and Staff,
It is likely that during the past week you have either read or heard about a very serious staph inflection called Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, commonly referred to as MRSA. MRSA infections are usually manifested as skin infections, such as pimples and boils, and occur in otherwise healthy people.
We have taken several steps to be proactive in addressing potential concerns regarding MRSA. We have been in contact with one of the district’s medical advisors to review precautionary procedures. In addition, an outside health and safety consultant toured our buildings to review our cleaning protocols. Our head custodians have been notified to take extra precaution when cleaning locker rooms and our school nurses will continually monitor students for any symptoms reported to them.
Precautionary procedures, as outlined by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), include “hand washing or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, covering any open skin area such as abrasions or cuts with a clean dry bandage and avoidance of sharing personal items such athletic equipment.” These protocols will be shared with our students in our physical education classes over the next few days. Moreover, we are actively encouraging students to use antibacterial hand cleaner that we have made available in our schools. Anyone who may think he or she has developed fluid filled pimples or any other rash that looks suspicious should contact his or her physician.
If you have any concerns regarding your child’s health, please contact your physician. Additional information about MRSA can be found on the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/.
