On Wednesday March 3rd, the Math department celebrated World Math Day.
History of World Math Day
Tuesday 13th March 2007 saw the launch of the inaugural World Math Day competition. Education was combined with the power of the internet to unite school students around the globe. The Live Mathletics game engine provided the perfect platform to support the event. In 48 hours over 287,000 students from 98 countries took part to smash the world record and answer 38,904,275 questions correctly. Out of the success of this day, World Math Day was born.
Students play at home and at school against other students around the world in live games of mental arithmetic. Each game lasts for 60 seconds and students can play up to 500 games, earning points for each correct answer. The students who answer the most questions appear in the Hall of Fame. Students cannot select their level but will move up as they progress.
World Math Day 2010
In this year’s competition student’s raced against the clock and 1,133,246 other students in 56,082 different schools from 235 countries to set a new world record by correctly answering 479,732,613 questions.
This was our first year competing at Memorial and we had 137 students register. Students played the mini games online from the computer labs, during class, lunch, study hall, from home, and even on their iphones in an effort to break the world record for “Largest Math Competition” and “number of questions answered correctly”.
We are very proud to inform you that our students answered 60,980 questions during the course of the competition, and were successful in becoming a part of a new world record!! Two of our students, Chung Wei Shen and Linda Perez, each earned Gold Certificates for completing more than 4,000 questions correctly!
World Math Day 2011
In March 2011, World Math Day will be even bigger again, becoming part of The World Education Games. This is the global education event, where all students and schools from around the world are invited to unite to set a new world record for the numbers of questions correctly answered in math, spelling, and science. It doesn't matter who you are, or where you are, this is a chance to be a part of the next World Record. The World Education Games takes place on the first 3 Wednesdays in March:
