Student Government

 

 

Senior High Student Council

 The Senior High Student Council is an elected body that serves as a liaison between students and the administration.  In addition, the Senior High Student Council is responsible for coordinating many after school and extra-curricular events including Pep Rally, King and Queen Contest, Homecoming Day Celebration, Battle of the Grades, Class Acts, Talent Show, food drive and other charitable events.Open to Grades: 10th - 12th Grade
 

NOTE: All Senior High Student Council officers and 10th-12th grade council officers must attend Senior High Student Council meetings. Other interested students in grades 10-12 are welcome.

 

Junior High Student Council

The Junior High Student Council is an elected body that serves as a liaison between junior high students and the administration. In addition, the Junior High Student Council coordinates the 7th grade

 

Barbeque, Halloween Happening, Junior High Dance, Junior High Sports Afternoon, and other events with the Senior High Student Council. Open to Grades: 7th - 9th Grade

Grade Councils 

General Description - Under the supervision of a faculty advisor, yearly elections for grade officers are held. Grade council officers and council members are responsible for planning activities, social events, fundraisers and community service projects.  Open to Grades: 7th - 12th Grade

Class Dues

To help offset the expense of class activities and events, each student is asked to pay dues. The dues structure is as follows:

7th Grade $3.00   8th Grade $4.00   9th Grade $5.00   10th Grade $6.00   11th Grade $7.00

Career and Technical Education Honor Society

CTE Honor Society is a service and honorary organization for students with exemplary achievement in Business Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Technology Education.  Activities include special projects which help meet the needs of the North High community and field trips exploring careers in related fields.

LOTE Honor Society

LOTE Honor Society is a service organization which helps meet the needs of the North High community.  Activities include tutoring students who need extra help in language.

Math Honor Society

National Honor Society

Meeting Day: Wednesday as needed  Time: 3pm  Room: Library   Advisor: Hirsch
The National Honor Society is one of the nation’s premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school students.  Applications are provided to juniors and seniors with a minimum 90% cumulative average. Selections are made by a faculty evaluation committee where leadership, character and service are considered and evaluated through a review of each student’s documented service and extracurricular activities. Once inducted, students must adhere to the NHS principles, attend periodic meetings, participate in a community service project, and offer assistance at school activities/fundraisers upon request.

National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society is a prestigious organization that offers membership to students who have demonstrated academic, extracurricular and moral excellence.  Students are selected for induction in the spring of the eighth or ninth grade.

Science Honor Society

Science Honor Society is a service organization which helps meet the needs of the North High community.  Activities include community service, tutoring students who need extra help in science, judging the junior high research science fair, and participation in charity fundraisers.

Tri-M Music Honor Society

Tri-M is an honorary organization for students who excel in music.

A World of Difference (AWOD)/Students to Oppose Prejudice (STOP)

The goal of this club is to help students understand their rights and the rights of others and to help them develop concern for the well-being and dignity of all.  Club activities are planned by North students to help us all appreciate the diversity of our school and community.

Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA)

The purpose of the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is to encourage acceptance and tolerance within the diverse population of our school, promote pride in our community, create a safe environment for all students of Valley Stream North High School, and educate the school community.The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) of Valley Stream North High School  works to foster an atmosphere of tolerance throughout VSN and will combat homophobia, discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation in all of its forms. The group strives to create a supportive group for all students. We strive to make Valley Stream North High School a caring, tolerant community for all of its students regardless of race, creed, nationality, physical disability and sexual orientation.

Interact Club

The Interact Club is an outgrowth of the Valley Stream Rotary Club.  Students will work for needy causes, providing service on a local, national and global level.

Kids on the Block

This organization helps students develop personal leadership skills, experience the satisfaction of helping and working with others, develop employability skills, understand themselves and their relationships with others, gain new friends, and gain recognition for accomplishments.

Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)

Students Against Destructive Decisions works towards raising the awareness of the school community and the community-at-large about the issues of drinking and driving, drug and alcohol use, poor decision-making and issues impacting adolescents. Open to Grades: 7th - 12th Grade

 

Student Peer Organization (SPO)

The Student Peer Organization is a select group of juniors and seniors that fosters positive relationships between older and younger students within our school and assists our incoming seventh graders through their first year in a high school setting.  Members are trained in problem solving techniques, decision-making activities and skills for group leadership.

Student Publications

 

North Star (Student Magazine)

Meeting Day: Friday  Time: 2:50  Room: 326  Advisors: Swinton/Hirsch

NorthStar, Valley Stream North's student news magazine, provides students with opportunities to contribute to all components of the production and publication process.  Staff writers contribute articles and/or photos related to areas of interest such as news, entertainment , editorial, feature and sports for inclusion in the magazine.  Editors coordinate the publication of each issue through their participation in weekly meetings, writing and editing of articles, laying out the magazine and  distributing the publication.

Yearbook (The Chariot)

Meeting Day: Every Day Time: 3:15-6pm Room: 200 Advisor: Orgel
Students create their own senior yearbook from cover to cover.  Students on the staff choose the theme and create an entire book based on that theme.  Sudents collect pictures, quotes and other materials from the senior class and transform them into an exciting, creative yearbook.  Students choose the layout for each page and use the publisher's program, as well as Photoshop.
Open to Grades: 11th - 12th grades through application and interview process.

 

 

Fine/Performing Arts

 

7:10 Downbeats

Meeting Day:  Monday/Wednesday Time: 7:10AM  Room: 311   Advisor:  Thorn

7:10 downbeats is a highly select vocal ensemble that specializes in modern a cappella music.  The group is limited to 25 students who are also members of 9-10 and Senior High Chorus.  Auditions are held in June for the following year.    Performances include school concerts, various school and public events, as well as participation in regional a cappella events.

Open to Grades: 9-12 Students who are enrolled in the Chorus program at North. 

Audition required.

 

Art Club

Involve students in both individual and school-wide art projects.

Breakfast Club String Ensemble

A select string instrument ensemble which carries out multiple performances throughout the year both in school and in the community during and after school hours.

Drama Troupe

Girl’s Chorale

Girl's Chorale is a select vocal ensemble for 7th and 8th grade girls who are members of the North High music department.  There is no audition required for this musical ensemble.  Rehearsals are every Tuesday afternoon from 3:15pm to 4:00pm.  Additional morning rehearsals may be scheduled throughout the semester.  Performances include school concerts, various school and public events, and field trips to local community centers.

Open to Grades: 7th and 8th grade girls in the Music Department, no audition required

Theater Management seeks to involve students in the "behind-the-scenes" activities (lighting, sound, etc.)  required for school productions. Students actively participate in the production-side of high-profile school events, while also learning the terms and devices often used in professional audio and visual scenarios.

Women's Choir

Women's Choir is a select vocal ensemble for 9th-12th grade girls who are members of 9-10 Chorus or Senior High Chorus.  Auditions for the group are held at the beginning of each school year.  Rehearsals are every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7:15 AM to 7:40 AM.  Performances include school concerts, various school and public events, and field trips to local community centers.

Open to Grades: 9th - 12th Grade, Auditions for new members are held at the beginning of each school year.

The ESL Academy provides ESL students with additional support in the content area subjects.  Activities include after school tutoring for students and night-time meetings for parents and students to highlight important scholastic information

Homework Center 'Success'

The "Success" Homework Center is designed to assist junior high students who are struggling academically.  The tutors provide homework assistance and serve as mentors.

Book Club

Students choose the book they would like to read and a few weeks later meet to discuss it.  Students need to read independent reading books in their English classes and this is the perfect place to find out about great pieces of literture and then discuss it with peers.

Future Business Leaders of America - FBLA

FBLA is the largest business education student organization in the world.  Students will learn more about business careers, get firsthand experience with business people, practice effective money management, learn the value of community responsibility and participate in competitive events.

Work on math problems to prepare students for interschool competition throughout Nassau County.
