Student Leaders Collaborate During North’s Leadership Academy

Students at North High School in the Valley Stream Central High School District recently participated in session one of a four-part Leadership Academy. The session began with an introduction by Principal Cliff Odell, who spoke to students about the essential attributes of highly effective leaders. Mr. Odell discussed how the academy was designed to help student-leaders better understand the expectations that the school has of them, provide them with a forum to share experiences, identify support networks, and to assist them in developing their own leadership styles. The first session was dedicated to identifying the attributes of effective communication, serving as a positive role model, and demonstrating courage.
This year was the first in which the Leadership Academy was facilitated entirely by students. While faculty volunteers helped to plan and monitor each workshop, student-leaders from last year returned as the instructors. Upcoming sessions focusing on team-building, communication, understanding personality types, and sharing leadership experiences are planned to take place throughout the school year.

Valley Stream North Named Top High School in America

Valley Stream North High School was ranked #365 on the Washington Post’s High School Challenge Index.  The index measures the number of Advanced Placement exams taken by students in the approximately 27,000 high schools across the United States and compares that to the number of students enrolled in the senior class.  The index is designed to measure how well a school challenges all of its students in preparing for post-secondary studies.  Based upon the index, North’s ranking among all high schools in the country places us in the top 1.3% in the nation! We are, of course, very proud of the students, parents, faculty, guidance counselors and support staff who work tirelessly to help all students achieve their full potential as they prepare for their future collegiate studies.

North High School is exceptionally pleased to announce that two student-musicians have earned All-State honors.  Danielle Andreani and Christina Cinnamo will be attending the All-State Conference for the Band and Mixed Chorus respectively.  This is truly an impressive accomplishment.  Congratulations to the students, their families and the North High School Music Department.

We are also very honored to have Silvia Arora earn National Merit Semi-finalist status. Silvia’s scores on the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) place her in the top 1% of all test takers in the nation!  She is one of 16,000 students nationwide out of approximately 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT to earn this status.  Silvia will continue in the National Merit Scholarship Program in hopes of becoming a National Merit Finalist and National Merit Scholar.
