Central High School was the recent recipient of a new scoreboard donated by the LaBarbera family, a beloved and charitable family in the school community.

The scoreboard honors the memory of John LaBarbera, a former Central High School student who passed away in 2005 during an after-school basketball clinic from a sudden cardiac arrhythmia.

At a recent special ceremony at the school, Central High School Principal Dr. Joseph Pompilio, who was joined by John’s parents, John and Susan LaBarbera, as well as faculty and students, unveiled the new scoreboard.

“This scoreboard offers invigoration and distinction to this gym,” Dr. Pompilio said. “He was an invigorating young man, who carried himself with distinction. He was a scholar and an athlete, and we must remember his contribution to this school and community.”

After the ceremony, John’s parents offered their thanks to Dr. Pompilio and the entire Central High School community.

“I’m happy to see his legacy will live on here at Central High School, a place he loved,” said his father John LaBarbera. “We try to give back as much as possible. It’s great to see the scoreboard up there, and I know it’ll be up for a long, long time to come.”
