On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Valley Stream South High School teacher Ginger Calderaro took her seventh-grade English class to A La Carte Cooking School in Lynbrook, where they prepared an authentic Greek meal. This event tied in with the students’ studies of Greek Mythology along with the classic text, “The Adventures of Ulysses” by Bernard Evslin.

In the spirit of learning, the students rounded out their experience by adding a little culture to the unit by exploring the culinary side of Greece. They boarded the Long Island Railroad and travelled one stop to Lynbrook. Upon their arrival at the cooking school, the class was divided into teams that made tasty treats such as Greek lemon soup, stuffed grape leaves, spanakopita, and braised chicken breast.  Finally, the sweet dessert reminiscent of baklava, was a crowd pleaser. South High School Principal Maureen Henry joined the class for this educational and exciting day.
