Valley Stream South High School juniors Joseph Campbell and David Manikas have been selected for a 2017 Achievement Award in Writing, presented by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Of the 517 nominated candidates, Joseph and David are among only 106 students in the nation and 17 in New York State that earned Certificates of Recognition.

Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students in their writing and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. NCTE recognizes students cited as excellent writers by their schools and the program’s judges.

Each entrant submitted a ten-page portfolio, with several pages that focused on a theme and others that reflected their best writing in general. This year’s theme was, “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.” Papers were judged based on content, purpose, audience, tone, word choice, organization, development, and style.
