Valley Stream North High School’s Home and Career Skills classes showed compassion to their neighbors on Sept. 25, when students cleaned up the front lawns and streets of the residential areas surrounding the school building.

This project was the expansion of an initiative that the Ecology Club originally introduced, and was tied in with the classes’ recent Go Green unit. Under the guidance of teachers Vanessa Coppeto and Jennifer Kehoe, students set out with trash bags and gloves as they picked up any debris they found in front of North, on the field, and out on Seabury Avenue and other nearby streets. They were assisted by volunteers from the Physical Education Leadership class.

The students moved quickly and worked together, eager to help beautify the neighborhood. They placed small notes in mailboxes stating, “Today your lawn was cleaned by a concerned Valley Stream North student.”
