Memorial Students Visit Hofstra

On May 23 and 24, Valley Stream Memorial's interdisciplinary 8th grade "Team Hofstra" had an opportunity to experience college life on a visit to Hofstra University. The trip was divided into two days to allow all participants to have an intimate visit with Hofstra's Director for Campus Visits and their student tour guides. The tour began as if these eighth-graders were seniors looking to attend Hofstra. They were informed about the academic requirements, the acceptance process and academic and recreational activities on campus. They also participated in a brief Q and A session, then had lunch in the University's Student Center, visited the bookstore and took a campus tour. Hofstra Education Department students, led by Hofstra Education Professor and retired Valley Stream teacher Marsha Iverson, were on hand to work with Memorial students in one of the many computer labs. Together they created "memes" focused on the end of the school year and their experience throughout their "college day.” Memorial students said they enjoyed the opportunity to see what a college campus was like and know these opportunities are right here in our backyard. This is the third visit Memorial eighth-graders made to college campuses this year — they have also visited Molloy College and Columbia University.
