North and South Take County Track Victories

Varsity Track and Field students from Valley Stream North and South high schools had an excellent season and earned numerous titles in the Nassau County Class A Championships. North’s boys Spartans were named the County Champion team, and South’s Falcons also achieved very impressive results. Both schools celebrated multiple individual boy and girl county champion athletes.

The County Championships were held on May 24 at Cold Spring Harbor High School. The boys Spartans finished in first place in the 20-team competition and scored 111.25 points. The team has a league meet record of 176 wins and no losses since 2006 and has secured 11 spring track and field county titles over the past 13 years, including the past four consecutive ones. The boys Falcons placed third with 53 points.

The Spartans were led by junior Jacob Schoenfeld, who was the individual event county champion in both the 400 Meter and 400 Meter hurdles events, while North sophomore Christian Cicilia won the county championship in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. Falcons athlete Ismail Abdullah was the County Champion in the 110 Meter Hurdles and Long Jump, while Abraham Cordero, a senior at South, won the Discus throw.

The Lady Falcons and Lady Spartans teams finished in second- and third-places, respectively, just behind North Shore High School. Individual County Champions from South include Chibugo Obichere for the 100 Meter, 200 Meter and 100 Meter Hurdles, Deanna Martin for the 1500 Meter and 800 Meter events and Lindsay Smith for Long Jump and Triple Jump. Juel Charles from North was named an individual champion in Shot Put and Discus.
