DNA Discoveries

AP Biology students in Patrick Tirino’s class at Central High School recently engaged in hands-on exploration during a trip to the DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor Labs. They participated in a lab called Alu Insertions Polymorphisms in Human Populations, which focused on human DNA fingerprinting. Students studied their own DNA to see if they have a particular DNA element by using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify the DNA segment and then used Gel Electrophoresis to determine their genotype. Students used Hardy-Weinberg equations and Chi Square analysis to predict the frequency of their genes in the populations.
