Students in the Valley Stream Central High School District’s Cosmetology Program continued their history of success in the Long Island Cosmetology Teacher’s Guild competition, held at the Huntington Hilton on May 6. This event was open to all cosmetology students and featured a variety of skills and creative talents.
Contestants entered several categories and came home with multiple awards. North High School’s Crystal Borges won second place in Senior Style with model Jessica Mena, also of North, while Dialis Gonzalez of Central placed second in Senior Fantasy with North model Victoria Lopez. Central student Tsahai Rutti and model Shianne Sillekens-Pinder placed second in Color and Tracy Sanon and model Fely Joseph, both from Central, earned sixth place in Junior Fantasy.

The Valley Stream students prepared for this event under the direction of teacher Barbara Liotti. Cosmetology is a districtwide, two-year program offered to Central, North, and South juniors and seniors. Participants learn professional techniques for manicuring, facials and skin care, haircutting, coloring, styling, chemical relaxing, permanent waving, make-up and more. They work on mannequins as well as classmates, and seniors provide services for the public on designated Salon Days. After 1,000 hours of classroom training, students can sit for the State Board Exam to become New York State Licensed Cosmetologists.
