Memorial Junior High School eighth-graders, along with teachers Mrs. Dunham, Mr. Elgort and Mrs. Lopez, traveled into Manhattan via the LIRR and the NY subway to explore the culture and history of one of Manhattan's famous areas: Harlem. They had a walking tour showing the highlights of the Harlem Renaissance, seeing where jazz greats played and Marcus Garvey spoke. The 91 year-old tour guide shared his love and knowledge of the area he so loved.

The highlight of the day was the visit to the acclaimed Apollo Theater on 125th Street for a backstage tour. Four lucky groups of students were chosen to perform an impromptu act on the hallowed boards of the Apollo stage, following in the footsteps of Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James, among others. All remarked how wonderful it was to visit NYC and experience Harlem on foot.
