Seniors throughout the Valley Stream Central High School District turned a new page in their lives on June 26, during 2019 graduation ceremonies. Although the events for Central, North and South High Schools were held at different locations, the students all took similar steps into a future filled with possibilities and opportunities.

Central’s ceremony took place at the Tilles Center, while North and South hosted their commencement exercises on their respective fields. At each gathering, the graduates were joined by families and friends, along with members of the Board of Education and administration.

Principals, valedictorians and salutatorians, student representatives and faculty advisers shared words of inspiration and reflection. Music was provided courtesy of school ensembles. Diplomas were presented as symbols of achievements and completion of a significant chapter.

Central High School Principal Dr. Joseph Pompilio noted that the seniors were deserving the magnificent setting they had the privilege of graduating in. “I could go on about my admiration for the senior class,” he said. “Instead on this special day it is best the seniors celebrate themselves through their own voices.”

The student speakers reflected on the journeys they took to reach this milestone and encouraged their peers to remember the times they shared as a class.

At North, Principal Rachel Green expressed her pride in the senior class and thanked them for welcoming her in her first year. She noted that she was most impressed by their kindness.

“You are a caring group of people,” she said. “Don’t ever lose that.”

The North graduation also featured a special diploma presentation to retiring Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Thomas Troisi, who started his career in the district as the building’s principal.

South High School’s Principal Maureen Henry shared advice and praise with the graduates.

“I want you to spread your wings and fly high,” she said. “But before you go, I want to give you a few thoughts to take with you. Be a giver, not a taker. Share love, not hate. Speak and write kind words that make others feel good. Reach out your hand to help when someone is in need. Show the world the importance of celebrating diversity. And always remember, every act of kindness grows the spirit and strengthens the soul. You will never regret being kind and no one forgets a kindness shown to them. Each of you has something very special to share with the world.”

Congratulations, Valley Stream graduates!
