North Students Graduate with Seal of Biliteracy

Valley Stream North High School is proud to announce its inaugural class of New York State Seal of Biliteracy recipients for the 2018-2019 school year. Nineteen graduating seniors qualified for the honor of demonstrating bilingualism, biculturalism, and biliteracy in both English and another language by meeting qualifications set for the by New York State.

The Seal of Biliteracy application, written by Spanish teacher Laura West and ENL/WL department chairperson Jennifer DiMaio, included criteria that demonstrated scholarship and high-intermediate proficiency in two languages. In our first year of implementation at North, 19 seniors applied and conducted committee presentations to demonstrate their language ability. Students achieved the Seal of Biliteracy at graduation in five languages; Spanish, Italian, American Sign Language, Japanese, and Urdu. Recipients were:

The Seal of Biliteracy is the highest honor awarded by New York State to language learners. Recipients were honored in a ceremony at North High School. "We are very proud of our Seal of Biliteracy recipients," stated Dr. DiMaio. "These students see the value of understanding multiple languages and cultures and demonstrated the skills they have developed over six years of language at North."
