Students in Vanessa D’Alessio’s International & Regional Foods class at Valley Stream North High School went on a field trip to Fairway Supermarket and Benihana.

With the help of an informative tour guide, students were able to learn a little bit about every department. Students explored various career opportunities available within the food industry.  In addition, they were taught how to roll sushi and make homemade fresh mozzarella cheese. Students were further engaged when learning the process of roasting and flavoring coffee beans.

The staff at Fairway were enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Students were able to sample a variety of cheeses, olives, pickles, bread and mochi, a Japanese ice cream dessert.  Students then enjoyed lunch at Benihana, where they discovered Hibachi style eating.
